Possible risks and side effects of various treatments are:

Acupuncture/bleeding/electrical stimulation: The most common side effects of acupuncture are fatigue and a sense of relaxation. The most common risks of acupuncture are bruising, slight bleeding, tingling, itching, or stinging at the site of needle insertion. There is also the risk of feeling faint, nauseous, or dizzy during or after treatment. A less common side effect is transient nerve damage, which may cause shooting pain that typically resolves after several days. A more rare occurrence is organ puncture, such as pneumothorax. You must inform your practitioner of any and all medical diagnoses and if you are or may be pregnant. Because acupuncture uses techniques that penetrate the skin there is the risk of infection, but this facility uses only single-use, surgically sterilized disposable acupuncture needles, and that the facility is committed to maintaining a safe and clean environment, as outlined by the Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

Moxibustion/TDP lamp: When applying external heat sources near or on the skin there is the risk of burns and/or scars. Some patients are allergic to moxa and may experience itching eyes, sore throat, or wheezing.

Tui-Na/manual therapy: Manual soft tissue work/massage may cause bruising or soreness lasting up to a week.

Cupping/Gua Sha: There might be bruising and soreness lasting upwards of one week are probable with instrument-assisted soft-tissue therapy. Fire is used to briefly heat the cups prior to application in order to create suction, so there is a risk of burn.

External herbs/nutritional counseling: You must disclose any allergies (diagnosed or suspected) prior to receiving nutritional counseling or external herbs (in the form of poultice, tincture, lotion, or liniment). There is the risk of itching, burning, or skin irritation from the use of external herbs.
